DESU Student Competes in Athletics Carnival

Amadis getting ready to run at the Athletics Carnival

Amadis is a keen athlete regularly running and cycling with his dad. Last year he participated in the Sydney City-to-Surf Marathon. In May this year he had the opportunity to take part in a Come and Try Track and Field day at Campbelltown Athletics Centre.

The day was organised by the NSW Department of Education and Training School Sport Unit for secondary students with intellectual disabilities. Twenty schools including the DESU took part. Students had the opportunity to try track events, long jump, shot put, discus and javelin.
Amadis took part in the 100 and 200 metre events. He usually runs many kilometres and found it hard to stop after such short sprints. In the 200 metre race, his mum stood at the finish line to indicate where to stop. Previously in the 100 metre race, he kept running well past the finish line. She said he loved being with the other students. Amadis doesn’t have any sense of competition and began each race slowly. When he saw everyone out in front, he sped up. He came sixth out of seven competitors. Amadis’ parents attended the carnival with him and were very pleased with the day, particularly seeing Amadis so happy. Well done Amadis on being a great representative of the DESU!
